About AIMBE
Founded in 1991, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) is a leading international non-profit academic organization in the field of Medical and Biological Engineering. The College of Fellows represents the top 2% of medical and biological engineers, including 3 Nobel Prize laureates, 17 awarded the Presidential Medal of Science and/or Technology and Innovation, and 261 inducted to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) and the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). They have exerted great significance on biomedical instruments, medical devices, disease treatment, and the development of public health policies.
Candidates are nominated and stringently selected by international peers annually, recommended by existing Fellows, and ultimately inducted by all Fellows through two rounds of screening. Only candidates who achieve a minimum of 74.5 percent positive votes will become a fellow. It is considered as the highest academic honor in the field of Medical and Biological Engineering in the United States.
About Mark Xueming Zou, Ph.D.
Mark, the first among his Chinese peers to receive a Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1990, holds 36 medical imaging patents in the United States, the EU, and China.
1990: A senior engineer at Picker International (now Philips Medical)
1993: Founder and President of USA Instruments (now GE Coils, which was once a global leader in magnetic resonance coils and still leads at the forefront of core medical imaging components and system research)
2003: Global Vice President and General Manager of the Magnetic Resonance Business Division in Greater China for GE Healthcare
2005 to present: Chairman of AllTech Medical Systems, LLC.
In 2005, Mark led a research team back to China. With R&D capabilities in magnetic resonance and commitment to proprietary intellectual property rights, the team has successively overcome major challenges in superconducting magnetic resonance imaging systems, such as wide-bore superconducting magnets, multi-channel spectrometer systems, RF coils, and imaging software. In 2007, they independently developed a 1.5T wide-bore superconducting magnet and MRI scanner in Chengdu, obtaining certification from the FDA, NMPA, SFDA, as well as CE marking. This has ended the history of absence of independently developed wide-bore superconducting magnets in China.
Over the past two decades, Mark has won numerous awards and honors, including the EY Entrepreneur of the Year in the United States, the Ohio Governor's Award, the First Top Ten Returned Overseas Chinese Award in Chengdu, the Sichuan Province Outstanding Talent Award, and the National Special Expert, Sichuan Special Expert. He has also served in many social positions, such as Vice President of the Sichuan Medical Association, and President of the Association of Chengdu Talent Development Promotion. He is committed to attracting high-end R&D talents, integrating clinical needs with national strategic planning, advising on policies for the medical industry, and building a good communication platform for government, enterprises, and hospitals.
In addition, Mark and his team have established a comprehensive industrial chain for technological innovations by building high-field MR engineering, and production and service centers. International standards are adopted throughout the process to ensure the translation of scientific and technological achievements. They aim to boost the competitiveness of domestic imaging equipment in the international market and take China's large-scale medical imaging diagnostic equipment to the world-advanced level.
